USA Tour Squad Announced

USA Tour 2010

The squad heading out for the pre-season tour of the USA has been announced and there are a few interesting inclusions.

Here’s the list in full:

VDS Scholes Berbatov Brown
Jonny Evans Gibson Kuszczak Giggs
O’Shea Rafael Fletcher Smalling
Nani Macheda Diouf De Laet
Amos Fabio Welbeck Cleverley
Cory Evans Obertan Hernandez (will join on 27th July)

I must admit that I was hoping to see Eikrem in there but the inclusion of Cory Evans, De Laet and Cleverley is good to see.

I’m also hoping that Diouf will get the opportunity to show a bit more of what he has been doing in the reserves because he hasn’t really done himself justice when playing in the first team.

Obertan is another who I hope can really make the step up this season and a couple of starts while in the USA won’t do him any harm at all.

Smalling was really only expected to play in the reserves this season but his inclusion here clearly shows that Fergie rates him higher than that.

The likes of Rooney, Evra, Vidic etc are not in there because they are on holiday following the World Cup whilst Ferdinand and Hargreaves are injured.

Neville & Owen are not quite fit to travel out and so are staying behind in order to work on fitness prior to the new season.

I’m gonna try not to read too much into this squad. With all the World Cup players out and the injuries we still have then United had to bring some youth players just to ensure we have a squad! I mean there’s more backup and youth players than proper first team players! Still hopefully the young fellas can prove themselves now… It looks like we really need youth to step up with no major signings again…

I’m still convinced there’s a signing to come. I thought we might have heard something last week but there’s clearly a reason why we didn’t.

    THIS week! :D

I’m trying to keep that optimism… But I just don’t know who we can get. The market (to be fair to Sir Fergie) is TERRIBLE value. I just hope Real Madrid throw some crazy money around to try and compete with Barca and then sell all their real talent on the cheap (a la Sneijder)

    Keep the faith, mate.

Fergie knows what he is doing and he DOES have money available. There’s still plenty of time.

The Sneijder rumours aren’t going away and, given that he is playing in the World Cup Final this evening, it is perhaps unsurprising that nothing has happened on that one, if indeed there’s any truth in it.

The whole transfer market just looks very stagnant at the moment. We’re not the only ones with our hands stuck in our pockets.

Well bummer bummer the Dutch lost :(

Anyways, what I am thinking is that this is probably another transition season. Esp since it is probably the phase out season for Giggs and lot. From this perspective a signing this year doesn’t really make any sense. I think the major signings will occur January onwards. By then it’ll be known pretty well where change is needed. Plus that 2006 article does give a good sense of what Fergie’s trick of bringing in youth is all about. He did say that there is nothing more fearful for an older player than to lose his spot to a youngster.
