That’ll Be That, Then
One of the longest drawn-out transfer sagas of the Summer finally reached its conclusion today as Mesut Ozil signed for Real Madrid and will undoubtedly join a cluster of stars sitting on the bench for some of the biggest games in La Liga this season.
Personally, I never felt that we would sign Ozil after Fergie decided to keep Tom Cleverley at United rather than send him on loan but that won’t stop legions of Manchester United fans from being disappointed at this development, especially as the fee is believed to be around £12million (a far cry from the £25-30million quoted during the Summer when the World Cup was on).
What would be nice to see now is for young Cleverley to be actually brought through into the first team. The game against Newcastle seemed to be the perfect game to give him a chance but he wasn’t even listed amongst the subs which was a strange one.

do you reckon he’s (Cleverly) a similar type of player to Ozil?
Disheartened me at this post.
There have been all kinds of rumours about us being in for Ozil but Fergie has never actually said much about him one way or the other except to say that “a few big clubs are looking at him”.
Fergie was at the Fulham v Werder friendly the other week which obviously got people’s tongues wagging but Fergie said he was just checking Fulham out because we play them this weekend. By all accounts, Ozil didn’t exactly set the world alight that day, either.
As for Cleverley, I don’t know how Fergie will use him. We seem pretty well stocked with wide players at the moment and the way he used him in the pre-season friendlies was more of an attacking midfielder through the middle and he did well.
I just look at our midfield and wonder where exactly Ozil or Cleverley would fit in. The game against Newcastle the other day was back to a 4-4-2 with Scholes and Fletcher and Scholes was absolutely masterful with Fletch working all over the pitch.
I just think Fergie’s decided to go with what he’s got for this season and take another look at the situation next summer when Cleverley has had a season under his belt although I’d like to know when/if he’s actually going to play the lad!
@Samson… yes Cleverley is same type of player as Oezil… he’s quick, he can play on the flanks and as an attacking midfielder, and he has an eye for goals… but Cleverley still lags behind Oezil in terms of ability, but he has a lot of potential…
Just realised, Cleverley is playing in a couple of Reserve friendlies this week.
He played against Shamrock Rovers in a 3-0 win the other day (Cleverley scored from the penalty spot) and played very well by all accounts (alongside Eikrem in the middle of the park).
He’ll probably be playing this evening against Arsenal reserves, too.
On a side note: news about Possebon moving back to Brazil.
Never heard much of him ever since he arrived. Guess its justified through his performance that hasn’t caught much of Fergie’s attention. Oh well, guess we’ll trust their judgement that he’s not the type of player we’re looking for.
Yeah, I heard something about that yesterday. He’s a decent player but if you remember, he got that really bad tackle and was out injured for a while afterwards and it seems to have really knocked his confidence because he hasn’t looked quite the same since.
