It’s Looking a Bit Ominous
Far be it for me to suggest that anyone is going to throw in the towel on the League when we’re not even into December but Chelsea’s 3-0 win AWAY to Arsenal yesterday was a massive result for Chelsea.
It has always looked like this season was going to be much like most of the last few seasons with very little between Manchester United and Chelsea but Arsenal away is one of those fixtures when you’re looking for them to drop points.
A 3-0 win suggests that there was no chance of that and if they can destroy a team like Arsenal on their home ground, who, exactly, is going to be taking the points off them this season?
Manchester United? Well, they beat us the other week but we have one more crack at them when they come to Old Trafford in April.
Liverpool? They beat Liverpool 2-0 and travel to Anfield in the penultimate game of the season. We can only hope that Liverpool have more than pride to play for by that stage.
Manchester City? It comes to something when I’m cheering the bitters on but I don’t hold much hope for them turning over Chelsea next week when they have just drawn their last seven games against far lesser opposition.
I have already said in a recent post that the African Cup is unlikely to affect Chelsea quite as much as we were hoping because the fixture list during that period has been quite kind to them.
In any case, it does not sit quite right with me when we are hoping that Chelsea will drop points because they have important players missing, there’s too much of an element of hoping they lose it rather than we win it on our own merits.
Of course, I am not for one second suggesting that Chelsea will win every game for the rest of the season, they WILL drop points. The problem is, by the same argument, so will we, but we really can’t afford to.
Were Chelsea a team who had never won anything, you might wonder if they could crack under the pressure of leading from the front for six months but despite some new arrivals over the last few years, the spine of the team is still largely the same as it was during Mourinho’s heyday and there’s a lot of big-game experience there.
No team has ever won four titles on the bounce and should Fergie pull this one off, it could go down as his best ever League triumph.
Sorry for such a negative post, it won’t happen again, I promise!
