Mark Hughes - Keeping Tight Lipped... (for now...)
Since the departure of Mourinho and since Fergie and Wenger have become best friends, Fergie hasn’t really had anyone to have a good bit of verbal with for quite some time now.
Rafa Benitez got into the ring briefly with his infamous little “Facts” rant but only succeeded in almost getting himself sectioned under the Mental health Act and Fergie didn’t really need to respond to that one, Rafa was punching himself in the face with every word uttered.
But maybe, just maybe, a new challenger is about to step through the ropes in Mark Hughes.
For all Manchester City’s talk of a “ten year plan”, things are really starting to gain momentum in the Blue half of Manchester and the signings made this summer are not the signings of a team hoping simply to finish higher than last season (they finished 10th).
No, this is a club that simply MUST finish no lower than sixth next season and really, should be mounting a serious challenge on the “Big Four”.
They have already lured Tevez away with promises of riches, have signed Adebayor from Arsenal and are chasing the Captain of one of the other “Big Four” (Chelsea’s John Terry). The only thing they haven’t tried yet is to buy Torres or Gerrard from Liverpool and then they would have the set.
Mark Hughes, whether he will say so in public or not, has declared war on the Big Four.
Wenger, Benitez and Ancelotti might shake an angry fist in the direction of Mark Hughes then duck for cover when Sparky heads towards them but Fergie will meet him head on as Hughes has already discovered.
In a recent interview, Fergie had this subtle message for Hughes:-
“It won’t be easy for them to win anything, even with the players they have bought. I can’t look at them as our main competitors. Liverpool and Chelsea are our main competitors.”
On the subject of Tevez, Hughes’ judgement is subtly questioned, “I didn’t think he [Tevez] was worth £25m – that’s just my judgement, maybe I am wrong”
And he continues with subtle mockery whilst turning up the heat a notch at the same time, “They have bought a lot of high-profile players but they have 10 strikers. That is a hell of a lot. I have not spoken to all the managers but the one or two I have are saying ‘Who are they going to leave out?’ How does he pick a team? We are all interested.”
As the season hasn’t even started yet, Mark Hughes has sensibly refused to get involved for the time being, dismissing Fergie’s comments as one man’s opinion.
What he must surely realise though, because he is an intelligent man, is that this is just the beginning. This is the pre-fight news conference. He’s not even in the ring yet.
Whether we will see a full scale meltdown as witnessed last season with Rafa’s “Facts” or all those years ago with Keegan’s “Luv It” remains to be seen but I’ll wager Hughes won’t be able to keep the dignified silence up throughout the season.
I’ll give him ’til November.
Welcome back to the big time Sparky!
